Scott Phelps has dedicated
his career to helping teenagers resist negative pressures and make
good decisions for their lives. He holds a B.A. from San Francisco
State University, and a Masters of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical
Divinity School in Deerfield, IL. Scott has served as a Young Life
leader, InterVarsity staff, and as pastor of an evangelical church.
As a pastor, Scott saw the devastating effects of abortion, extra-marital
affairs, and teen pregnancy as he counseled many families struggling
with these situations. Concluding that something must be done to prevent
this, he explored ways to stop unwanted pregnancies. In 2004, Scott
ran for U.S. Congress campaigning for pro-life issues and education
for youth about the importance of abstinence.
Scott has authored some of the leading abstinence education programs
used nationwide including Game Plan, Quest, Aspire, Navigator, and
Excel. These curricula are tailored for middle school and high school
students in both public and faith-based settings. He is the founder
and Executive Director of the Abstinence & Marriage Education
Partnership, which provides training and curriculum for parents,
teachers, pregnancy care centers, and youth pastors on ways to effectively
communicate the message of abstinence and the value of marriage
to teens. Scott is also co-founder and Chairman of the National
Abstinence Education Association (NAEA) in Washington, DC, which
serves as a voice for abstinence education in legislation and federal
funding. Mr. Phelps was the recipient of the 2008 Lifetime Service
Award from the Abstinence Clearinghouse. He has been interviewed
on local and national media including CNN Headline News, CNN.com,
NBC, Washington Post, Moody Radio, and more.
His inspiring, yet practical perspective is born out of his work
as a pastor, as an abstinence educator in Chicago public schools,
as an author, and as a parent. Scott speaks at pregnancy care center
banquets, as well as abstinence events and marriage conferences.
He and his wife Carrie have four children, Jennifer, Megan, Jonathan,
and Matthew, and reside near Chicago, Illinois.
